Throughout this guide, I will use the terms GPT and ChatGPT interchangeably, as they refer to different versions of the same technology. For instance, ChatGPT is the GPT-3 model adapted to provide better conversations in a chat-like interface. GPT-3 and GPT-4 are just other versions of the model. As OpenAI continues to develop this technology, you can expect even more advanced versions, like GPT-23 and GPT-24!

The advice given applies to other similar artificial intelligence tools, such as Google's Bard, Anthropic's Claude, Bing Chat, and Amazon's Bedrock. Keep in mind that there are many language models and architectures out there. While OpenAI's latest GPT model is currently the best available, this could change. As competition grows, be prepared to explore new options and test alternative tools that claim to be superior or become popular as GPT alternatives. The techniques discussed here work with various models, as they all use pre-trained transformers to produce their outputs. Still, the quality and consistency of AI responses may vary between models.

How Does ChatGPT Work?

GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer, offering a high-level insight into the technology. A transformer is a method for identifying patterns in information, which helps artificial brains—called Neural Networks—make better predictions in a computer.

A Neural Network improves as it learns. Recognising that "innit" is short for "isn't it", "USA" means "United States of America", or a full stop ends a sentence can help the AI store these patterns for later use. The more patterns it encounters during learning, the better it becomes at understanding and replicating them.

GPT's learning process is similar to how our brains learn based on exposure and experience. The more patterns it sees, the better it becomes at identifying them. Think of GPT as a five-year-old child, GPT-3 as a high school student, and GPT-4 as a university student. Over time, AI capabilities may grow exponentially, with improvements happening more and more quickly.

GPT is a much more advanced version of the predictive text feature on your phone, which tries to guess your next word based on what you've just typed. Like predictive text, GPT selects each word (or token) in sequence, not knowing the subsequent choice until the current one is made. Tokens can be thought of as small word chunks. To choose the most likely next word, GPT uses its artificial brain, trained on huge volumes of internet text, and examines your input prompt before composing the response word-by-word.

It's astonishing how this step-by-step process can produce highly sophisticated replies. Some researchers even think it shows signs of human-like intelligence or General Intelligence. If proven true, this would be a groundbreaking discovery.

Using ChatGPT for the First Time

If you're new to ChatGPT, don't worry! In no time, you'll be having a conversation with this artificial intelligence (AI). To begin, go to the OpenAI website (www.openai.com) and find the ChatGPT section, or search "OpenAI ChatGPT" on Google. There, you can sign up for a free or paid account.

Once you've logged in, you'll see a straightforward layout with a big text box in the middle - that's where the fun begins! To start chatting with ChatGPT, type your question or message into the box. Make your input clear and specific for a better AI response. So, instead of typing "tell me something", try "explain how solar energy works".

After typing your message, click 'Send' or press 'Enter'. Soon, you'll see ChatGPT's response in the text box, like in a messaging app. Keep the conversation going by typing more messages or follow-up questions. ChatGPT can handle back-and-forths, making your experience engaging and informative.

If you're using GPT for work or business via the main ChatGPT interface, remember to change the platform settings. Go to the data controls section and turn off 'Chat History and Training'. Otherwise, your conversations might be used to train future AI models – not ideal for confidential company or customer information! Bear in mind, you'll need to update this setting on every device and browser you use.

ChatGPT can be utilised in numerous ways, such as accelerating the creation of social media content, summarising intricate legal language, translating material or adapting it to suit a different audience – the list is extensive.
